Cars have always been a fascination for many people. From the first time they learn how to drive, kids are eager to take a look under the hood and see all the moving parts. If you’re looking to learn more about cars, this article is for you. In it, we’ll teach you how to open the hood of a car from start to finish.
Unhook the negative battery cable
If you have to open the hood of your car, it’s important to first unhook the negative battery cable. This will prevent any potential electrical shock if you accidentally touch any exposed wires.
Remove the air filter
There are two screws at the base of the air filter. Use a Phillips screwdriver to remove them.
The air filter can then be lifted off of the car.
If there is debris or build-up on the filter, it can be cleaned with a vacuum cleaner and a hose.
Remove the fan belt
If you don’t have a spanner, a screwdriver, or a car jack, you can use a wrench. Loosen the bolts that hold on the fan belt. You’ll see two of them on each side of the engine compartment. Twist the belt until it comes loose, then pull it out.
If you do have a spanner, screwdriver, or car jack, you’ll need to remove the bolts that hold on the fan belt cover. There are four of them. Be careful not to lose the cover! Once the bolts are removed, gently lift up the cover and set it aside.
Next, remove the fan motor by unscrewing the two screws that hold it in place. Make sure to keep track of which screws go where- those will be needed later!
Disconnect the four wheel drive switch
1. Disconnect the four wheel drive switch.
2. Open the hood.
3. Locate the battery.
4. Pry it out with a flat-head screwdriver.
5. Drop the battery in a safe location.
Lift up the hood and remove the engine cover
On the front of the engine cover is a latch. Push it in from the top and lift up on it to remove the engine cover.
You’ll now see the crankshaft, camshafts, and valves. Pry off the rubber grommets that hold these in place and set them aside.
Next, use a flathead screwdriver to pry off the two bolts that hold the camshaft covers in place. Carefully pull each cover away from the camshafts. You’ll now see the cam lobes and valves.
Use a drop of oil or WD-40 to help lubricate these parts, then replace the cam covers and bolts. Put everything back together in the reverse order, making sure to line up the grommets before screwing them in place.
Unscrew the five bolts holding on the radiator support
1.Remove the three bolts on the top of the radiator support
2.Disconnect the hoses from the radiator support.
3.Lift off the radiator support.
4.Remove the four bolts holding on the fan shroud
5. Remove the fan shroud.
6. Disconnect the two hoses from the thermostat housing.
7. Remove thermostat housing and wires from fan motor.
8. Remove fan motor and blades from housing.
Remove the radiator
1. Remove the two screws that secure the lower radiator support bracket to the car.
2. Push down on the radiator and lift it off of the car.
3. Loosen the two bolts that hold the upper radiator support bracket to the car and remove it.
4. Clean any debris or water from around the cooling fan, thermostat and other areas.
5. Place a towel on the ground and place the new radiator in position.
6. Tighten the bolts that hold the radiator to the support bracket and replace the fan belt.
7. Replace the lower radiator support bracket and secure it with screws.
8. Replace the upper radiator support bracket and secure it with bolts.
Slide out the water pump
If you’re having trouble opening the hood of your car, you may need to slide out the water pump. This is a small, metal device that sits in the engine and helps to circulate water and oil throughout the system. If it’s difficult to get to, try using a tow truck or some other large vehicle to help move the car.
Unplug and remove the electric motor
The hood of a car can be opened using the following steps:
1. Remove the four screws on the front edge of the hood.
2. Lift up the hood and remove it from the car.
3. Unplug the electric motor from the car’s motherboard and disconnect the power cable.
4. Remove the fan from the hood using a screwdriver.
5. Remove the air filter and replace it with a clean one.
6. Clean all dust and debris off of the engine, oil pan, and transmission housing.
7. Inspect all bolts and screws for corrosion or loosening and replace as necessary.
Remove the fan belt and pulley
The fan belt and pulley are attached to the motor fan on the engine block. To remove them, first loosen the belt by turning it counterclockwise with a wrench. Then pull it off of the pulley.
Slide out the
hood of a car.
1. Open the door on the driver’s side.
2. Lift up the front edge of the hood and pull it forward.
3. Hook your fingers under the lip at the back of the hood and pull it forward and upward until it pops open.
4. Remove the panels in front of the engine by pushing them forward and upward, then lifting them out of the way.
5. Look for bolts securing the components in place and remove them with a wrench or socket (if necessary). Be careful not to damage any wires or hoses connecting the components.
6. Clean any dirt, grease, or grime from around the engine before replacing any components.
