So you’ve got a car with power steering, but you can’t seem to get the pulley off? Fear not, because this guide will show you how to do it with ease. Plus, we’ll tell you what to do if the pulley becomes loose after being taken off.
Identification of the Pulley
When it comes to removing a power steering pulley, it is important to identify the correct one in order to avoid damage.
The following image illustrates the different types of power steering pulleys and their associated bolts.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Bolt: Located on the front of the engine adjacent to the air cleaner box, this bolt holds the TPMS sensor in place.
Driveline Extension Bolt: Loosely attached to the transmission at the rear of the truck, this bolt loosely extends the drive shaft.
Power Steering Pulley Bolt: Located at the top of the driven shaft, this bolt fastens the power steering pulley to the transmission.
In order to remove a power steering pulley, start by loosening all bolts in sequence, beginning with the bolt that fastens it to the transmission. Once all bolts are loose, carefully lift off the power steering pulley.
Removal of the Pulley
Removing the power steering pulley is not a difficult task, but it is necessary to remove the correct screws in order to do so.
1. Park your vehicle on a flat surface.
2. Remove the wheel using the appropriate tool.
3. Disconnect the brake line from the wheelwell and drain any fluid that may be present.
4. Use a Phillips head screwdriver to remove the six screws that hold the power steering pump assembly to the chassis.
5. Gently disconnect the power steering hose from the pump assembly and set it aside.
6. Lift off the pump assembly from the chassis.
7. Clean all debris off of the pulley and replace if necessary.
8. Reinstall screws and hose in reverse order of removal.
Cleaning and Maintenance
When it comes to maintaining your car, one of the most important things you can do is keep the engine and transmission clean. This means regular inspection and cleaning of everything that comes in contact with them, including the power steering pulley.
Here are a few tips on how to get the power steering pulley off:
1) Start by removing any screws that may be holding it in place.
2) Once it’s loose, use a wrench to loosen the bolt that holds it on.
3) Carefully remove the pulley from its mount.
4) Clean and lubricate the new pulley as necessary before re-installing it.
