The process of getting a key out of a car ignition can be difficult, but with the right tools and techniques, you can do it in no time at all. In this article, we’ll show you five different ways to get a key out of a car’s ignition.
Locate the Key in Your Car
If you find yourself locked out of your car and with no key to hand, there are a few things you can try before resorting to calling a tow truck. The first thing to do is to locate the key in your car. Checking under the seat, in the glove box, or in the engine compartment may be all that is required to find it. If you can’t find the key, you can try using a key extraction tool. These devices fit over the key hole and use a screwdriver or other small tool to pry up on the key so that it can be removed. Finally, if all else fails, you can go ahead and call for a tow truck.
Remove the Key from the Ignition
How To Remove a Car Key from the Ignition
If you find yourself locked out of your car and don’t have the key, there are a few steps you can take to try and remove it.
1] Try using a plunger to suction onto the top of the key and pull. If this doesn’t work, you can use a coat hanger or a wire hanger to try and pry the key off.
2] If neither of those methods work, you may need to get a key extractor. These devices are designed to remove car keys from the ignition without damaging them.
Remove the Cover of the Lock
If you have a car with a keyless entry, you will need to remove the cover of the lock in order to get the key out. There are a few different ways to do this, depending on the type of lock.
If your car has a mechanical lock, you will need to pry off the cover with a flathead screwdriver. Make sure not to scratch the surface of the door.
If your car has a battery operated remote keyless entry, you will need to remove the front grill. There is usually a small Phillips head screw hidden behind it. Pry it off and remove the key fob.
Insert a Dremel into the Keyhole and Cut Out the Key
If your car has a keyless system, you’ll need to get a new key made. Here’s how:
1.Remove the trim around the keyhole. This can be done with a small flathead screwdriver or a credit card.
2. Cut out the keyhole using a Dremel tool with a cutting wheel attachment. Be careful not to cut into the car’s wiring.
3. Remove the old key and replace it with the new one.
Remove the Old Lock and Replace It with a New One
If you have a car with a keyless ignition, you may need to remove the old lock and replace it with a new one. Follow these steps to get the old lock off your car and replace it with a new one:
1. Open the car door using the key and turn on the ignition. The car should start right up.
2. Remove the cables that connect the ACC (anti-theft) system to the engine. These cables are located behind the glove box, to the right of the steering wheel.
3. Disconnect both clips that hold the ignition switch in place. There are usually two of these clips, which you can remove by gently prying them off with a small flathead screwdriver.
4.Carefully pull out the switch assembly (which includes the key). You will probably find some screws holding it together, so be sure to take those off as well before you discard it.
5. Replace the switch assembly with a new one, making sure to reconnect both clips and screw them back in place. If your car has a security system, be sure to re-install the ACC cables before closing up your car!
