When you turn the key in your car, what do you think is going to happen? The engine is going to start right up, right? Wrong. In most cases, when you turn the key, the car’s ignition switch is actually working. What happens instead is that the computer inside the switch sends a signal to the engine. The switch simply relays this signal to the spark plugs, which ignites the fuel and starts your engine. However, if there’s something wrong with that switch—like moisture or corrosion—the switch won’t send enough of a signal to the engine, and it won’t start. This is what’s known as a “stalled car” and it can be quite dangerous. If you notice your car isn’t starting well or it seems to be struggling to move, it might be time to have a look at your ignition switch.
What Causes A Car To Stall?
When a car stalls, it can be due to many different reasons. A bad ignition switch can be one of the causes, as this device controls the basic function of the engine. When it malfunctions, it can cause the car to stop in between gears or not start at all.
What to do if your Car Stalls
If your car stalls, there are a few things you can do to get it started again. The first thing to check is the ignition switch. If it’s defective, the car may not start because of a problem with the engine. If the switch is working properly, try turning the key from the “on” position to the “off” position several times. If that doesn’t work, turn off all of the car’s electrical systems and try to start it again. If none of these tips work, you may need to take your car to a mechanic for assistance.
How to Fix a Bad Ignition Switch
If your car stalls when you try to start it, there is a good chance that the ignition switch is bad. This switch controls the flow of electricity to the spark plugs, and if it’s broken or gone out of adjustment, it won’t send the right amount of current to the plugs enough times to start the engine. You can test your ignition switch by disconnecting the battery and trying to start the car with just the key; if it still stalls, your ignition switch is probably bad. If you have a manual transmission, you’ll also need to replace the shift solenoid (or linkage) as well.
