Vehicles use ignition coils to turn the engine over. A faulty coil can cause misfires, poor performance and other problems. Knowing which coil is yours and how to inspect it is important for both your safety and the long-term health of your vehicle. In this article, we will explore the different types of ignition coils and what to look for when buying or replacing one. We will also provide instructions on how to test a coil and determine if it’s faulty. By following these tips, you can keep your car running smoothly and avoid costly repairs down the road.
What is an Ignition Coil?
An ignition coil is a small, electric motor that helps start your car. It’s located near the spark plugs and helps to create an electrical spark when you turn the key in the ignition. If your coil is bad, it may not create enough sparks to start your car. This can be caused by a number of things, including dirty or missing wiring, corrosion on the coil, or a faulty key switch. If you’re having trouble starting your car, it’s best to take it in for service.
What Causes an Ignition Coil to Fail?
An ignition coil is a component of your car’s engine that helps to start the engine. Over time, an ignition coil can fail, causing your car to not start. There are multiple causes of an ignition coil failure, including faulty wiring and worn out parts. If you’re experiencing problems with your car not starting, it’s important to have it checked out by a mechanic.
How to Test an Ignition Coil
Testing an ignition coil can be a difficult task if you don’t know where to start. When testing an ignition coil, look for two things: spark and fuel. First, check for spark by grounding the engine and touching the coils lead wire to the metal part of the car’s chassis. If you get sparks, the coil is good. Next, check for fuel by depressing the pedal to the floor and then turning on the engine. If there is no gas coming out of the carburetor, then the coil is bad.
How to Replace an Ignition Coil in a Car
If you’re experiencing problems with your car’s ignition, it might be time to replace the coil. Coils are typically replaced in pairs, so if one is bad, the other needs to be replaced as well. Here’s how to do it:
1. Remove the bolts that hold the cover on the engine block (see photo 1).
2. Disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the ignition coil (see photo 2).
3. Remove the old coil from the engine block and discard it.
4. If there is a new coil already installed in the engine block, first loosen its screws (see photo 3) and then remove it.
5. Install the new coil on the engine block in reverse order of removal (screws first, then bracket). Tighten all screws (see photo 4).
6. Reattach the positive battery cable and re-cover the engine block with the cover (see photo 5).
