For those of us who can’t leave our homes, what do we do? Plenty of us reach for our phones and open up a browser to search for deals on perforated leather car seats. Materials You’ll Need to Make Your Own Perforated Leather Car Seats

-Leather jacket or fabric
-Circular saw (or a sharp knife)
-Permanent marker
-Ruler or measuring tape
-Safety glasses
-Perforated leather (available at craft stores)
1. Cut the leather jacket or fabric into desired size and shape. Remember to allow enough overlap for stitching.
2. Measure the circumference of your seat’s backrest, and draw a circle around it with the permanent marker. Cut out the circle using a circular saw or a sharp knife. Be careful not to cut through the stitching!
3. With right side of leather facing up, stitch around perimeter of cutout with a needle and thread. Make sure to leave enough opening so that air can flow freely through perforations while driving. Don’t pull stitches tight – they should be relatively tight but not painful when touched gently. Leave a small opening in center of perforation for inserting seat cushion insert later on.
4. Turn seat cushion insert over so that right side is now facing up. Place it inside opening in perforated leather and pull it snugly into place. Stitch around edges of insert, making sure to leave a small opening at each end for inserting the Velcro straps later on.
5. Use the Velcro straps to secure seat cushion insert in place, stretching strap evenly across backrest circumference.
6. Reattach leather jacket or fabric to seat backrest using hidden stitches (see instructions below). Make sure that your stitching is concealed by the perforations in the leather!
Tools and Techniques for Assembling Your New Car Seat
Ideally, you will want to buy a car seat that already comes with perforated leather. However, if you don’t have this option, there are some other tools and techniques you can use to assemble your own car seat cooling system.
One way is to use a hair dryer. To create an airflow through the perforations in the leather, heat up the area around the perforations until they begin to smoke. Then quickly move the hair dryer away from the seat and allow it to cool down before using it again.

Final Thoughts on How to Make Perforated Leather Car Seats
For those of you who are new to perforated leather car seats, or just want some more information on how to DIY them, this guide will help.
Materials:
-Leather material (2-3 pieces)
-Perforator/knife
-Cordless drill with bit size that fits the perforator
-Can of silicone sealant
-Sticker or fabric glue
-Permanent marker or cloth tape measure
-Ruler or a straight edge
-Hammer/nail gun
Start by cutting your leather material into 2″ wide strips. Be sure to leave a 1″ border on one end so that you can sew them together later. (See image below for reference).
Now it’s time to start the perforating process! Use your cordless drill with the bit size that fits your perforator to make small holes all over the leather strips. Make sure not to go too deep or you’ll end up ruining your seat! You can also use a can of silicone sealant to seal up any holes after perforating. (See images below for reference). Let the adhesive dry completely before continuing.
Next, take each piece of leather and fold it in half so that the raw edges are aligned. Pin each folded edge together using a permanent marker or cloth tape measure, then use your hammer/nail gun to smash down the middle of the folded piece until the edges are flush. You now have 2 perforated leather pieces.
Next, use your glue to attach one of the perforated leather pieces to the bottom edge of the other piece, making sure to line up the holes from before. Once both pieces are attached, use your ruler or straight edge to make sure that the perforated edges are even. Then use your permanent marker or cloth tape measure to cut off any extra fabric around the perforators. (See image below for reference).
Finally, you can stitch the 2 pieces of leather together using a seam allowance of 1/2″ (see image below for reference). Be sure to double-check your measurements before stitching! Once everything is sewn together, use a Hammer/nail gun to finally smash down any remaining creases in the leather. (See images below for reference).
