Car Revving on Its Own when Started

There’s something eerie about a car that starts up on its own without you having to do anything. It seems like the preset journey has begun all on its own, with no input from you. But what if this wasn’t always the case?

As it turns out, there was a time when cars required manual intervention in order to start – and that was before the advent of modern technology! In this article, we’re going to take a look at how cars used to work, and how automation has gradually replaced human labour over the years.

What is a car’s

A car’s emission and ignition system keeps the vehicle running. The emission and ignition system checks the air quality in the car and starts the engine.

How to Reset a Car’s ECU

If your car is revving on its own (aka “pinging” or “pops”), there’s a good chance the ECU (engine control unit) is fried. Resetting the ECU can fix the issue, but it’s a bit of an involved process. Here’s how to do it:

1. Park your car in a safe place with the engine off.
2. Remove the battery and ground connector.
3. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
4. Remove the air cleaner cover (it has two Phillips screws).
5. Remove the spark plugs (six in total).
6. Remove the ECU cover (it has six Phillips screws).
7. Locate and remove the black jumper wire adjacent to pin 1 of the ECU (see photo below).
8. Replace all of the spark plugs, air cleaner cover, battery, negative battery cable and ECU cover.
9. Reinstall all of the components in reverse order, making sure to reconnect the black jumper wire to pin 1 of the ECU before installing the cover.
10. Start your car and check for pinging or pops.
