In the story “The Angel Returns,” by J.D. Salinger, protagonist Jack Holden is upset over the breakup of his relationship with the beautiful and talented girl he dated in high school, Karen. Karen has since moved to New York City and became an actress while Jack has remained in Manhattan working as a writer for a publishing company. One day, out of the blue, Karen sends Jack a copy of her latest play which she has just finished performing in New York. The play is about an angel who returns to Earth after being away for many years and falls in love with a human girl. Although Jack had always thought Karen was the most amazing person he had ever met, now that he sees her play he realizes that she was really just like all the other girls he had dated – beautiful on the outside but lacking substance on the inside. In the end, Jack decides that Karen is not worth caring about and rejects her again. This story highlights one of the biggest problems with relationships – we tend to focus too much on the external factors (such as looks) and not enough on what lies inside. In other words, we are often fooled by appearances into thinking someone is valuable when they aren’t really
