To keep things simple, most mechanics recommend using a fluid with a viscosity rating of at least SAE 30. However, if you frequently drive in very warm or cold weather conditions, exceed 75 mph on dirt roads or are regularly driving in heavy traffic, it might be prudent to use a higher-viscosity fluid such as SAE 40 or 50.
