Power steering lines can become contaminated with oil, water, and other contaminants over time. If left unchecked, this can eventually lead to a power steering failure. In this article, we will discuss how to properly bleed power steering lines in order to prevent a failure.
What is power steering?
Power steering is a system that helps steer a vehicle by providing power to the wheels. Power steering is typically found on larger vehicles, such as trucks and SUVs, because it makes them easier to maneuver.
What are the symptoms of a power steering line failure?
If you’re experiencing any of the following symptoms, it’s time to get your power steering system serviced:
-A decrease in power or responsiveness
-A pulsing or erratic feeling when you turn the wheel
-Difficulties shifting into gear
-Unusual noise from the power steering system
If you notice any of these issues, it’s best to get your car serviced as soon as possible. A failure in your power steering line can lead to serious car repairs, so it’s always better to be safe than sorry.
How to bleed a power steering line
Bleeding a power steering line is an essential step for fixing a problem with your vehicle’s steering. Here’s how to do it:
1. Park your vehicle on a level surface.
2. Turn off the engine.
3. Remove the key from the ignition.
4. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
5. Open the hood and locate the power steering line connecting block (sometimes referred to as a “pump”).
6. Loosen the bolt that secures the pump to the block using a wrench, then carefully remove the pump.
7.Insert a bleed screw into one end of the power steering line and tighten it using a wrench. Insert another bleed screw into the other end of the power steering line and tighten it using a wrench, being careful not to overtighten either screw.
How to replace a power steering line
If you’re experiencing problems with your power steering, or if it just seems like it’s not working as well as it used to, you may need to replace your line. Here’s how to do it:
1. Park your car in a safe place and turn off the ignition.
2. Remove the front bumper by unscrewing the two bolts at the front edge and then pulling straight up.
3. Remove the fascia by removing the six bolts around the perimeter and then disconnecting the electrical connectors.
4. Remove the four clips holding the power steering pump in place and then remove it from the frame.
5. Remove the three bolts holding the power steering line in place and then pull it out of the bracket.
6. Disconnect the old line from the pump and install the new one by threading it through the brackets and then screwing them back into place. Torque these screws to 12-15 Nm (9-12 ft/lbs).
7. Reconnect all of the electrical connectors and replace the fascia, bumper, and bolts. Reverse these steps to re-install your car.
