It’s that time of year again. Your car has been parked for a few weeks now and you finally decide you need to get it out. But no matter how many times you try, you just can’t seem to get the key out of the ignition. Fear not, dear reader. This article is here to help. In it, we will discuss the various methods you can use to remove a car key from the ignition without any trouble at all. From using a screwdriver to using a jimmy tool, there is surely an approach that will work for you. So read on and have at it!
Locate the Key
If your car key is not turning in the ignition, there are a few things you can do to try and locate it.
One option is to pull out all of the cables connected to the key, then try turning the key in the other direction. If that doesn’t work, you can check to see if the key has any metal shavings or debris embedded into it. Finally, if none of these options work and you really need to get a new car key, you can go down to a local car dealership and have them cut one for you.
Remove the Key
If you’ve ever had to remove a car key from the ignition, you know it can be a frustrating experience. Here are four tips to get the job done quickly and easily:
1. Check the security chain. If your car has a security chain, make sure it’s properly engaged. You may have to use a key tool to disengage it.
2. Disconnect the battery cables. If your car doesn’t have a security chain, disconnect the battery cables to prevent accidental starting.
3. Use a keytool or chisel. A keytool is specially designed for this purpose, but a chisel will also work if you have access to one. Strike the end of the chisel sharply against the metal of the keyhole several times until it pops out.
4. Use pliers or channel locks. Pliers work well if you only need to remove one key at a time; channel locks are better if you need to remove more than one key at a time (or if you’re having trouble getting any of the other methods to work). Insert one end of the lock into the jaws of another piece of metal and twist until it clicks into place; repeat with other keys
Replace the Key
If your car key won’t turn in the ignition, there are a few things you can do to try and fix the problem. One option is to try replacing the key yourself. This is a relatively easy process, but it’s important to follow these steps carefully to avoid damaging your car or yourself. Here’s how to do it:
1) Disconnect the battery cable from the vehicle. If you don’t have access to the battery, you can remove the negative cable first by pulling it out from under the car.
2) Locate and unscrew the key wheel immobilizer screw (it’s usually near or on top of the wheel). Sometimes this screw needs to be loosened before the key wheel can be removed.
3) If necessary, use a T-bar tool or long wrench to pry up on either end of the key wheel until it pops off. Once it’s free, you can discard it or save it for later if you need it for another project.
4) Carefully remove the old key from its housing. Be sure not to lose any screws or other pieces as you disassemble the old key. Once everything has been removed, put everything back together in reverse order
