If you’re installing a Graco car seat in a forward-facing configuration in an F-backward vehicle, follow these steps:

1. Loosen the shoulder harnesses and remove the infant insert.
2. Install the car seat base in the vehicle’s rear facing position. The shoulder belts should be snug but not too tight.
3. Lean the child sideways against the vehicle and install their upper body restraints into the slots on either side of the car seat base.
4. Reattach the infant insert by threading it through one of the belt loops on top of the restraint panel and then tightening it down with a screw clamp ( Figures 1, 2 ). The strap should dangle over one shoulder or below waist level ( Figure 3 ).
5. Tighten both shoulder harness straps to ensure a good fit, making sure that they overlap each other by about 2″. Do not tighten them so much that they cut off circulation to your child’s arms ( Figures 4, 5 ).
