How can you diagnose a bad power steering pump?
If your car stalls, or you notice a loss of power when you turn the wheel, your power steering pump may be the problem. Here’s how to diagnose a bad power steering pump:
1. Park your car in a safe location with the engine off.
2. Remove the battery cables.
3. Connect a voltmeter to the black ( negative ) lead on the electrical connector located on the left side of the engine block near the oil filter housing.
4. Turn the ignition key to ON and wait for about 10 seconds until all lights go out.
5. Start the engine and use the wheel to guide it in a straight line while monitoring voltage readings with the voltmeter. If voltage drops below 12 volts, then your power steering pump is probably bad and needs to be replaced.
