How To Rebuild Power Steering Rack

Your power steering rack can be a major source of trouble over time. If it’s not functioning properly, your car will feel jerky and difficult to handle, making driving in traffic a nightmare. Here’s how to rebuild a power steering rack, step by step.

What You Will Need

Parts you will need:
-Power steering rack
-U-joints
-Ball joint
-Bushings
-CV Joints
-Hubs
-Clutch slave cylinder (if applicable)
Step 1: Remove the wheel. The first thing to do is remove the wheel. You’ll need a lug wrench and a ratchet. The lug wrench will fit on the lugs on the wheel, and the ratchet will fit on the spokes. Use the ratchet to loosen the wheel by turning it in a clockwise direction. Once it’s loose, use the lug wrench to remove it.
Step 2: Remove the power steering pump. Next, you’ll need to remove the power steering pump. To do this, you’ll need to remove two screws that are located underneath the dashboard near the engine. Use a screwdriver to remove them. Once they’re removed, take out the pump by pulling it out from underneath the dashboard.
Step 3: Remove the power steering hoses. Now that the pump is out, you’ll need to unscrew both hoses from the pump. Use a wrench to unscrew them and then discard them.
Step 4: Disconnect the power steering

Procedure

To rebuild power steering rack on a car, you will need the following:
-Towel
-Paint brush
-Paint
-Ruler or a straight edge
-Sander paper
-Paint roller
-Clutch kit (or pressure plate) and associated hardware
-New power steering hose
-New power steering belt

1. Clean the area around the power steering rack with a towel. Use a paint brush to paint the area black. This will help conceal any existing damage and make the job easier. Allow the paint to dry completely before proceeding.
2. Using a ruler or straight edge, measure and mark the position of each bolt on the rack. You will also need to determine the circumference of your clutch kit’s pressure plate. Once you have these measurements, you can begin to remove your old power steering belt. Note: The bolts that hold the belt on should be replaced with new ones as they can become loose over time. To do this, use a pair of pliers to grip one end of the bolt and twist it counterclockwise until it comes off in your hand. Then, replace it with a new bolt and tighten

Tips and Warnings

If you’ve ever had to rebuild your power steering rack, you know it’s not an easy job. Here are some tips and warnings to keep in mind when rebuilding your rack.

1. Make sure you have all the necessary tools and parts before starting the job. A power steering rack rebuild can be a time-consuming project, so make sure you have all the necessary tools and parts before starting.

2. Be careful when working with the fluids involved in a power steering rack rebuild. Power steering fluid is a highly sensitive mixture of oil, water, and additives, and can cause serious injury if mishandled. Be sure to use safe handling techniques when working with this fluid and never pour it down the drain or into the environment.

3. Use caution when working on the vehicle during a power steering rack rebuild. The weight of the vehicle and the torque applied to the steering wheel can cause serious damage to the chassis and components of the power steering system. If possible, work on the vehicle in a safe area outside of the car.
