In this tutorial, we will show you how to remove a Graco Car Seat from its base latch in just a few simple steps. So grab some supplies and get ready to pull off that car seat like a pro!

Detach the Base Latch from the Vehicle

Detach the Base Latch from the Vehicle

Graco car seats come with a base latch that attaches to the vehicle’s seat belt system. To remove the car seat from the base latch, follow these steps:

1. Disconnect the vehicle’s seat belt system by pulling down on either side of the belt buckle.
2. Lift up on the car seat and pull it straight out of the base latch.
3. If there is a Safety 1st SmartBase add-on, unhook it before removing the car seat from the base latch.
4. Flip up or remove any infant insert if necessary and set it aside.
5. Pull off any protective coverings on the car seat frame and clips, such as those for rear-facing use.

Disconnect the Buckle

If you are having trouble disconnecting your Graco car seat from the base latch, follow these instructions. Warning: Serious injury can occur if the car seat is not properly disconnected from the base. Follow these instructions carefully to avoid injury.

1) Make sure your Graco car seat is properly secured to the base with the straps. The car seat should fit snugly against the base and there should be no slack in any of the straps.

2) Remove one of the adjustable buckle straps by looping it around and behind the buckle and pulling steadily until it comes free. Do not pull on either end of the strap – only loop it around and behind the buckle.

3) Repeat step 2 with the other strap. Be careful not to pinch your child’s skin while removing the straps!

4) Now use a flat-head screwdriver to pry open either side of the base latch (see picture). Keep in mind that you will also need to remove this latch when you want to replace or move your car seat. If necessary, use a Phillips head screwdriver to unscrew each part of this latch (3 screws on each side). Be very careful not to damage them – you will need them later when reassembling your Graco car seat!
