If you’re having trouble removing the power steering pulley on your own, fear not! In this article, we’ll show you how to remove it without using a puller.
Identification of the Pulley
If your car has power steering, the pulley located near the steering wheel is most likely the culprit of your trouble. Here’s how to remove it without a puller:
1 Park your car in a safe place with the engine off.
2 Remove the air filter and wash the engine bay.
3 Use a torx bit (T10, T25, or T30) to remove the screws that hold the power steering bracket to the car’s frame.
4 Lift up on the power steering bracket and pull it off of the car’s frame.
5 Remove the two bolts that hold the pulley to the bracket.
6 Loosen the pulley nut and slide it off of the pulley.
7 Clean all of the debris off of the pulley and bolt.
8 Reinstall the Pulley nut and bolt, making sure that they are tight.
9 Replace the power steering bracket and screws, making sure that they are tight.
Removal of the Pulley
If you need to remove the power steering pulley without a puller, there are several techniques that you can employ. One approach is to use a large screwdriver to pry the pulley off of the shaft. Be careful not to scratch the surface of the shaft with the screwdriver. Another option is to use a nutdriver to loosen the screws that hold the pulley on and then remove it.
Installation of a New Pulley
If you have a Power Steering Pulley that is worn, or has been damaged in some way, it is important to replace it before it causes further damage. This article will show you how to replace the pulley on your own without the use of a puller.
Required Tools:
-Phillips Head Screwdriver
-Auto Parts Warehouse Pulley Removal Tool
-17mm Socket (or wrench that will fit the size of the screw)
– breaker bar or heavy object to support vehicle while removing pulley
– Jack stands
– hose clamp
Step 1: Start by parking the vehicle on a level surface. Remove the wheel and tire.
Step 2: Locate the power steering pump house assembly on the front of the car. It should be located behind both front fenders. The housing may be glued or bolted to the body, so take care when removing it. Once removed, you’ll see four bolts securing the housing to the chassis (two on each side). Remove these bolts using a Phillips Head Screwdriver.
Step 3: Carefully remove the power steering pump from the housing by pulling straight back on it. Be very careful not to touch any moving parts!
