How to Fix an Ignition Switch

1. Remove the key from the ignition and wait 10 seconds. If the key still won’t turn the engine, it might be necessary to remove the battery for at least 10 minutes before trying to fix the switch again.
2. Disconnect both wires going to the ignition coil by removing their connectors from near either end of the coil. Handle these wires very gingerly—if they’re damaged, they can short out against each other and cause serious damage to your car.
3. Using a voltmeter, measure each side of the coil (positive and negative) while it’s connected to power by touching each wire directly to one terminal on the meter and then touching the other terminal to an unpainted metal part on either side of the engine block beneath where you’ve removed the spark plugs (or Coil). The reading should be around 12 volts DC when all three wires are connected this way. If one or more sides of the coil are below 12 volts, replace that wire with a new
